OTHG 2014 Reilly Cup Champs - Singletons

7:00pm - Sal's Place vs Singletons - 60ft field

The 2014 Reilly Cup finals featured the two most successful OTHG teams over the last 9 years (which is as far back as the league website goes). Sal’s Place and Singleton’s have had 11 finals appearances and 7 championships between them during this period of time. They split 2 games during the regular season and Singleton’s became the winner’s bracket representative in the 2014 Cup by beating Sal’s deep in the tournament.

Sal’s took the first game 14-7. The game was close until the 8th inning when Sal’s broke it open by stringing together some timely hits and taking advantage of a Singleton’s miscue or two. Sal’s held Singleton’s to 7 runs with outstanding all-around defense, which was particularly impressive given that some of their significant contributors were visibly fighting through late-season injuries.

Singleton’s showed resolve and bounced back with a decisive 25-6 victory in game 2 to win the 2014 Reilly Cup. Singleton’s bats woke up in the second game as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead. Singleton’s defense tightened up as well with outstanding infield play and some solid plays in the outfield. It was a great team effort. While there were many important contributors, the MVP of the game was pitcher Pete Scozarri - who consistently threw strikes, had countless defensive highlights up the middle, and drove in a bunch of runs in game 2.

The 2014 tournament represented the 6th finals appearance and 4th championship for Singleton’s in the last 8 years. This win was particularly gratifying given Singleton’s up and down season, which featured periods where they looked like the team to beat and periods where they looked like the team everyone beat. Special thanks to manager Bob Davis (who earned his second championship as manager), player/coach Tommy Sorrentino (who filled in as manager for a three week period and catalyzed the team’s turnaround), and Mr. Greishaber (our loyal scoreboard operator and inspirational leader).

We would like congratulate Sal’s Place on a great season and extend thanks to Jimmy Reilly and the Board for continuing to take the league to new levels and for overseeing another well run season.
