Congratulations to Over the Hill Gang veteran Butch Flecker, the league's Player of the Week. Butch's 4 hits powered Lockie & Nowachek Family Chiropractors (L&N) to a 20-17 win over LaCorte Family Auto. Over the last two games, Butch has slammed 10 consecutive hits.
Paradox Café defeated McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home 14-9 this past Friday. Don “Lefty” Carlin climbed back on the mound for Paradox after a victory last week and found only 8 men behind him in the field. With a rash of injuries Paradox Café fielded 9 players and broke out to a 3-0 lead over 5 innings. Walt Hasemann jump-started the offense with 3 hits and a sac fly on the night. Bob Kirk tweaked a hamstring but stayed in the game and managed 5 hits in a stellar effort to keep the team in the game. Lenny Baliestreri continued his hot hitting with another home run to give Paradox a 6-2 lead. Wally Sefert was hot all around as he played with a fever to avoid the forfeit for the team. Unbelievably he went 3-4 with 3 RBIs and a SAC fly. Walter, Lenny and Al Celeste roamed the 3 man outfield like pros, keeping Paradox in the game all night. Brian Mulcahy scalded the ball all night with four hits and 2 runs scored while James Mignone continued his hot fielding at second and scored twice on the night. Mitch Maghakian chipped in some late inning hits and Don Carlin pitched a great game. He also contributed 2 RBIs as Paradox got the win.
LaCorte took an early lead and was up 14 – 6 by the end of the second inning. L & N answered with 9 runs in the fourth inning to take a 18 – 14 lead. Peter Cestare relieved pitcher Ben Greco in the third inning and kept the powerful Lacorte batters at bay. He only allowed three runs the rest of the way. Rookie Rich Apollo, Ron Schwabe, and Thomas Joseph each had 3 hits. Mike Quigley had two key hits with two outs and made at least five outstanding defensive plays at shortstop to preserve the victory. Everyone contributed something in the win. L&N 20 - LaCorte 17.
Barco Construction moved back over .500 with a 19-10 win over Singletons. The score was not reflective of the game as it was a very close game for the first 8 innings. Singletons started the scoring with 2 in the top of the first and held Barco scoreless over the first 4 innings. After 5 innings the score was 4-1. Barco tied it up with 3 in the bottom of the 6th. Singletons went ahead with 2 in the top of the 7th. Barco answered with 5 in the bottom of the 7th to go ahead 9-6. Steve Jacobson started the inning with a walk and moved to 3rd on Gary Jambor's double. Terry McPartland continued hit torrid hitting with a base hit. Tim Dorman hit a bloop double driving in 2 runs and scored all the way from second base on Brett Moritz's long out to right field. Dennis Ryan then hit a triple and scored on Dave Saur's triple. Singletons answered with 3 in the top of the 8th to tie the score at 9. Barco's bats finally exploded in the bottom of the 8th. After the first out, Barco sent 12 straight batters to the plate before registering their 2nd out. They scored 10 runs highlighted by Brett Moritz's triple. Singletons scored one more in the top of the 9th before Barco shut them down to finish the game. It was a great game for Barco highlighted by great defense and good base running.
