After being idle for a month, Barco Construction finally resumed their season, beating out LaCorte Family Auto 11-3. Although the Barco bats were sluggish from such a long lay off and only scored in three innings, they were able to come up with enough timely hits in key situations to earn their victory. In the 1st Russ Graham’s long double and Dave Ringer’s ensuing sac fly gave Barco the all important early lead which they never relinquished. They increased their lead with a six run 4th to go up 8-0, all coming on 2 out hits from Dave Ringer, Kevin Moloney (2 RBIs), Dave Saur, Bill White and Dennis Ryan. In the 5th, Barco pushed across three more runs with the big hit being Jim Hose’s two out 2 RBI triple. Barco’s defense played well throughout the game which helped keep LaCorte off the board till the 6th, which by then Barco had built a substantial 11-0 lead. A key play for Barco was Steve Jacobson’s exceptional catch of a Texas leaguer that saved two runs and helped snuff out a LaCorte rally. Steve also had an “ugly” but still effective DP in the 9th to stifle LaCorte’s last chance at a comeback. Other fine plays for Barco came from outfielders Dave Saur and James Widmer and Russ Graham’s solid play at short.
The Mers
machine kept rolling and stayed hot with a second tournament win over
Moby's by the score of 16-11. Mers got off to an early, big lead and
never looked back. The team continues to hit very well and field fabulously.
The Mers infield play has to be one of the best in the league right
now and its outfield play exceptional. Byron Bodine and big time rookie,
Ron Paolo, were both 3 for 4 with Paolo driving in two RBIs. John Longo
went 2 for 3 and continued his long ball game putting one ball ten feet
over the right centerfield fence on the sixty foot field while driving
in three runs. Joe Fanning pitched very well keeping most of the big, dangerous Moby bats either silent or relatively quiet and was 3 for
3 at the plate. Jim Fileccia, Kevin Brosnan, and Bill Sutherland were
2 for 4 with Sutherland driving in three runs. George Cohan continues
to sacrifice his body to make big plays in the field and was 2 for 3
along with Tom Fitzpatrick, who played well even though he has
been hurt most of the season. Jack DeBobes once again played a perfect
game in left field and Tom Vella did his usual great job catching behind
the plate keeping Fanning from imploding at times. Joe Girimonte continues
to prove his outstanding worth to the team by showing game in and game
out that he is one of the best second baseman in the league making some
real big time plays against Moby's at critical times in the game. Overall
Mers exceptional second half of the season play has rolled over into
the tournament to keep them one of the four remaining unbeaten teams.
