Let's Hit One Downtown for Down Syndrome... Friday, August 7th!!!

The Over the Hill Gang is once again gearing up for its annual charity fundraiser. Please save the date, Friday, August 7th at Allen Park. This year the league is teaming up with Long Island’s Greatest Hits radio station, B-103, to raise money for children with Down Syndrome. The evening’s festivities will include an appearance by radio personalities Wiseman and Frank, refreshments, a night of softball, a magic show and valuable raffle prizes. Everyone is welcome. It is a great night to spend some time with your friends and neighbors while raising money for a fantastic cause. It is also your chance to see if your neighbor across the street can really play softball!

8:20pm - Barco Construction versus Zwanger Pesiri Radiology - 60ft field

Barco Construction continued its fine play winning their 6th straight with a 23-5 victory over Zwanger Pesiri Radiology. Barco started out quickly scoring two in the 1st on RBI hits by Dave Ringer and Kevin Moloney, but ZP tied it up at 2 in the 2nd. Barco regained the lead in the 3rd as they scored four and never looked back as they scored every inning there on in. They added another five in the 4th on run scoring hits by Dennis Ryan (2), Dave Saur and James Widmer and six more in the 8th with the highlight being Bob Bergsten’s 2 run HR. Offensively Barco banged out 36 hits with 9 players having 3 or more hits on the night and 10 (of 13) guys having RBIs. Dave Ringer led the way with 5 RBIs on a 5-5 night which included 2 doubles and a triple, along with Kevin Moloney (4-5) and Gary Jambor (5-5) who also had 2 RBIs each. Those having 3 hits were Dave Saur, Dennis Ryan, Rick Pedone, Tony Ranieri, Bob Bergsten and Jim Hose. Defensively Barco played well especially the outfielders who had to deal with the mist and fog. They also killed a ZP rally with a unique DP. Pitcher Gary Jambor gloved a smoked line drive but had his glove ripped off his hand but fortunately the ball stayed within the glove that landed nearby which he recovered in time to start the pitcher to 2nd to 3rd DP. The win improved Barco’s record to 9-2.

9:40pm - Changing Times Pub versus Autocraft - 60ft field

Autocraft jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never let up beating Changing Times Pub 21-3. Denny "Ace" Oehl pitched a great game, keeping CT off the bases for most of the game. Autocraft used both the small game and the big game this time with a barrage of hits from Dave Rubino, Joe "Mr. Steady" Lutz, Tommy Vanasco, and Brian Landy. The power came as home runs by John Garrity, Bob Huebner, and a bomb by Benny Macchia that landed somewhere near the 12th hole at the Bethpage Black.

9:40pm - Granny O'Shea's Pub versus Singletons - 90ft field

The late game on the 90' field between Singleton's and Granny O'Sheas started out with Granny's getting 1 run and Singleton's pushing across 8 and it looked like one of those nights for the Boys in Black again. But that’s when the game really heated up into the great rivalry which has developed over the last 20 or so years. After trading 5 runs apiece in the 3rd inning, Big Red slowly built the advantage to a seemingly comfortable 9 runs, with time now becoming a factor, but here comes Granny's back with a vengeance scoring 10 runs giving them a 1 run lead heading to the last inning. Now facing last licks, Paul Canalattos leads off with a scorching double, (his 4th hit of the night), Dennis Passaretti moved him over to 3rd, with Bob Davis knocking the tying run in with a sac fly. They walked rookie sensation Nicky Gadinis and left the heroics to John Gannon who won the game for RED with his 3rd hit of this very exciting evening. Final score Singleton’s 21 -20 over Granny's. Hot bats on the night were Paul Canalattos 4-4, Larry Grieshaber 3-4, Nicky Gadinis and Johnny Gannon both 3-3. A Tip of the hat to Tommy Sorrentino and Richie Smindak who both crushed long home runs and Frankie Gordon who reached base all 4 times at bat.
