Round 4
[you submit it, we'll print it]
The Over the Hill Gang's post-season tournament finally resumed Friday night after a series of rainouts. Before the highlights, the league sends its very best to Board members Gary Jambor and Al Palleschi who are both on the rebound after hospital stays. Comeback soon, the league has been around 35 years only because of guys like you who keep it running smoothly year after year.
After all the rain, Autocraft was ready in a big way. The team came up with a well rounded effort by everyone in beating a tough Singletons team 22-7. Yes, Autocraft hit well in scoring 22 runs, but the real gutsy performance was on defense where the team was nearly flawless. Time after time and play after play it was clear that Autocraft came to play. It started with Mike Ferretti putting up a terrific effort against such a dangerous batting order as Singletons'. Rookie Don Simone made two fantastic grabs running out from short to get over his head pop-ups. And Tommy Vanasco stopped their opponent in their tracks with a diving catch in dead center.
On the offensive side Don Simone was the star with two homeruns, one being a line drive over the right center field fence. Davey Rubino kept innings going from the last spot in the order with two solid singles. Brian Landy, Bob Cruickshank, and Denny "Ace" Oehl each went 4 for 4, while Chris Piccininni had three hits. And a gritty performance by a hobbled Benny Macchia with three hits rounded out a great night for Autocraft.
Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology advanced to the 5th round with a 19-10 win over Moby Drugs. ZP opened with bats blazing, scoring 14 runs in the first three innings. Vinny Foppiano belted a 2-run homer in the first to start the scoring. Marc Fisher hit a monster drive to centerfield that went for one of the longest triples the league has ever seen. Bino Reverberi, Karl Dessel, Brian Tinney, Rich D’Amico, Gene Hennigan, Ira Berger, Jerry Mazza and John DeFalco all added RBI hits as everyone joined the hitting spree. “Eagle Eye” Vinny Ciullo walked twice with the bases loaded to pick up 2 RBI. On defense, pitcher Brian Tinney set the tone with a series a tough grabs on the mound. Tinney stifled a powerful Moby lineup getting a big lift from outfielders Foppiano and Reverberi. For the night, Hennigan led the way with 4 hits. Fischer, D’Amico, Berger, DeFalco and Reverberi had 3 hits each as ZP continued an impressive tournament run.
