The Over the Hill Gang lost one its most valuable and colorful members on May 20th. Ed “Fast Eddie” Shillitto is an OTHG Hall of Famer who made countless contributions to the league as a player, Board member and most notably as a fundraiser. Ed was the man behind the “mic” at many league charity events, coaxing the crowd to wager during the home run hitting contest. His efforts raised thousands of dollars for people in need. Ed was a proud American who will be missed by many. The league sends its deepest sympathies to the Shillitto family.
Moby Drugs beat Lockie and Nowachek Family Chiropractors 14-12. The team blasted 23 hits and the defense was led by shortstop Henry Hasemann. Moby’s victory ended L&N’s quest for an undefeated season. The L&N team looked more like a M-A-S-H unit than a softball team. Three players sat out due to injuries (Jimmy Doyle, Joe Auer and Bill Camacho) and two others were not 100% (Tom DiSantis and Damon Pishva) but gave their all.
Almost every game, it seems L&N is always coming from behind to either tie or win the game. This game was no different with L&N scoring eight of the twelve runs in the last three innings. Pitchers Ron Schwabe and Ben Greco combined to keep Moby from getting too big of a lead. One of the hitting stars was Tim Jones, who went 4 for 5, and legged out a triple even after suffering a leg injury during the game. Adding to the hit parade were four guys who went 3 for 5. Mike Quigley, Tom DeSantis, Pete Gschwing (with a triple) and Tommy Joseph (who legged out a little squib down the third base line). Unfortunately, it was not enough.
B. K . Sweeney's took on Paradox Café in a battle for first place after a spirited team speech by pitcher Jimmy F. Sweeney's came out abusing the third base line with base hits galore up and down the line up. Led by Joey G. (2 RBI's), Byron(2 RBI'S) ,Big John(3 RBI'S) and Al all with 3 hits a piece. Two hits each by Jack D. (3 RBI's), Ron (RBI's), George C (RBI's), Jim (2 RBI's), Tom V (4 RBI's) Tom B. and Mark. Kevin B. lead a sparkling defense turning 3 double plays keeping Paradox off the bases. Final Score 25 -5. Team Speech next week at 9:40.
Autocraft put their hitting shoes on and beat Barco 23-11. Mike Ferretti got his first win, pitching a good steady game. Rookie Chris Piccininni went 5 for 5, Denny "Ace" Oehl went 4 for 5 and John Garrity and Tommy Vanasco had multiple hit nights. Brian Landy cleared that right field fence for a homer. The defensive gem of the night came when Bob (aka Rob) Huebner made a great catch in right field. He fired to relay man Aldo Balducci who turned and threw home in time to make the out at the plate, stopping a Barco rally.
In league action Friday night, Zwanger Pesiri Radiology weathered a furious final inning rally from Changing Times Pub to hang on for a 18-17 win. Unlike its two previous games, ZP made it out of the first inning without being down a bunch of runs. In the 3rd, ZP took the lead for good when Marc Fisher blasted a three run homer, one of four hits he had on the night. Jerry Mazza also had four hits, part of balanced ZP attack. Vinny Ciullo had three hits and scored three times. Ira Berger and Bino Reverberi both remained hot, with another three hits each. The defense was led by rookie Vinny Foppiano who covered a lot of ground in left center.
