Jerry (CT) and Jerry (Moby)... rivals and friends in the league... |
The Over the Hill Gang played its first full slate Friday night after four games were washed out the previous week. Special thanks to the elected officials who helped kick off the league’s 35th season; John Venditto, Joe Belesi, Anthony Macagnone, Joe Pinto and Rebecca Alesia.
The league sends its best wishes and prayers to Hall of Fame member Ed “Fast Eddie” Shillitto for a speedy recovery.
Also, kudos to Nancy Maghakian for designing the league’s well received special anniversary hat (see logo above).

Autocraft opened the season making a point that they are a team with strength on offense and defense by beating Bar Boy 23-3. No one can deny that Denny "Ace" Oehl pitched a beauty allowing only three unearned runs. He kept Bar Boy off the bases with solid pitching and solid defense behind him from Tommy Vanasco and rookie Don Simone. It was home run night for John Garrity who hit two over the fence and was 4 for 4. Also having good nights at the plate were Joe "Mr. Steady" Lutz, Brian Landy, Aldo Balducci and newcomer Chris Piccininni. Bob Huebner blasted a triple, and Benny Macchia crushed a homer to left that almost got to the railroad.
This year the black and green of Granny O'Shea's has become the black and silver of Paradox Cafe. The OTHG welcomes Paradox Cafe, its newest sponsor. While some things change, some things remain the same as Bruce Kubart, Bob Meyers and Mitch Maghakian rejoin the newly minted "Men in Black" after a year on the DL. Welcome back also to Bob Thompson after his playoff injury last year.
Paradox Cafe played host to McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home in the opening game of the season. Both teams came out swinging. M&T opened up with 4 runs and Paradox roared back with 10 hits in the first inning and 8 runs. M&T added 4 more in the 2nd inning but Paradox kept the pressure on throughout the game, adding 3 in the 4th, 7 in the fifth and 7 more at the end of the game. Don Carlin led Paradox with a 4 for 4 night, including a 2 run homer down the right field line and 2 run triple down the left field line. Andy Cohen added a home run himself as Paradox recorded 31 hits on the night. The pitching tandem of Bob Meyers and Bob Thompson teamed to hold M&T in check as Paradox Cafe went on to a 25-11 victory.
Lockie & Nowachek Family Chiropractors got its season started after last week’s rainout, and they did not waste any time against Barco Construction. Barco put up a run in the first, but behind some timely hitting and a big three-run triple by Jerry Sutherland in the bottom of the inning, Lockie & Nowachek took the lead and never looked back. Ron Schwabe pitched the first seven innings, and Peter Cestare closed out the game out limiting Barco to only four runs through nine. Mike Quigley capped off the night of scoring with a three run homerun in the bottom of the eighth. The game ended on a great running catch in centerfield by Damon Pishva. Final score: Lockie & Nowachek 20, Barco Construction 4.
Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology opened with a hard fought 16-15 win over B.K. Sweeney’s Parkside Tavern. It was a seesaw battle that ended in the bottom of the 8th. John DeFalco, Ira Berger and Pete Mendelson set the stage with clutch hits and Jerry Mazza got the game winner with a two out single. ZP began hitting in the first inning. After the first two batters made out, John Hernandez, Marc Fischer, rookie Vinny Foppiano, Tyrone Clark, DeFalco, Berger and Mendelson all singled to give ZP a 4-0 lead.
ZP also had a big 5th inning, scoring 8 times to wipe out a 6 run deficit. Rookie Art O’Neill and Vinny Ciullo got into the act with RBI singles.
Shortstop John Hernandez anchored the defense. He made a number of impressive plays and combined with Pete Mendelson to turn a very nice DP. Bino Reverberi nailed a runner at third with a laser throw from right center. Pitcher Brian Tinney got the win holding down a tough BK lineup. For the night, Hernandez, Foppiano, Clark, Berger, Mendelson and DeFalco all had three hits. ZP welcomes its “rookies”; Vinny, Art and Gene Hennigan who was the hard luck batter of the night with several drives hit right at the defense.
It was a long cold winter for LaCorte’s Family Auto Repair, especially after the playoff meltdown against Changing Times Pub.. However 2010 is a new year and L.F.A was waiting for a rematch. L.F.A crushed Changing Times 32-3. The team looked very impressive with solid defense, turning three double plays . The offense exploded for over thrity runs.
