NOTE:
This week's article combines Sept 30th make ups for
Round 2 (originally scheduled for Fri, Sep 26th) and Oct 3rd Roun3
games.
8:20pm - Granny O'Shea's versus Bar Boy - 90ft field - Round 2
on Sep 30th
After an edge of
your seat victory last week, Granny O'Shea's continued on to the
second round of the Reilly Cup Winners' Bracket. They squared off
Tuesday against 3rd seeded Bar Boy. The game started off with 3
runs in the first for O'Shea's as the top of the order patiently
drew three walks for two runs and added a SAC fly by Bob Thompson to
close out the inning. Bar Boy chipped away 2 runs of their own in
the bottom of the second inning. In the third inning, Lenny
Balestrieri and Don Carlin each singled as Bob Kirk drove a double
in the gap for 2 runs. O'Shea's now had a 5-2 lead. This week
Granny's defense was on top of their game as the errors decreased
and the run production for O'Shea's went up. The fifth inning had a
five run breakout as Don Carlin and Mitch Maghakian singled in runs
while Walter Hasemann drove in 2 of his own. Bar Boy would not give
in as they scored 2 more runs to help close the gap to 12-4. After
a narrow victory last week, O'Shea's was looking for a cushion and
found it in the 8th inning. Lenny Balestrieri stepped up with a 2
run RBI single and Bob Kirk cleared the bases with a 3 run shot (7
RBIs for the night) that helped Granny O'Shea's shut down Bar Boy
20-5. Bruce Kubart and Mike Hadnagy helped with RBIs during the
night while Al Celeste, Brian Mulcahy and Lyle Nigro all helped out
with key hits and multiple runs scored. Thank you to Brian for
pitching a close game and his battery mate Lyle as he turned some
nice plays behind the plate, especially a slow roller where he
gunned a man out at first.
9:40pm - Barco versus Zwanger Pesiri - 60ft field - Round 3 on
Oct 3rd
Karl Dessel stroked the game winning hit to cap
a rousing 9th inning rally that lifted Zwanger-Pesiri to
a 4-3 win over Barco Construction. Trailing 3-1 with two outs in
the bottom of the 9th and with no runners on base, George Eicher,
Tom Dittmeier, Bino Reverberi, Rich D’Amico and Dessel strung
together consecutive singles. D’Amico’s hit tied the game, one of
three singles he had on the night. D’Amico was even more impressive
at shortstop, snaring a number of hot shots with his back hand and
starting two key double-plays. Pitcher Brian Tinney was equally
impressive in the field, robbing Barco of at least two hits with his
quick glove. Also stepping up in the field, Joe Manning and Tom “T”
Ball both saved errors with scoops at first. Ira Berger sprung like
a cat to grab a swinging bunt and nailed a runner at first. John
DeFalco caught an over the shoulder pop-up and Dessel cut down a
runner at the plate with a throw from right field. In a night of
very little scoring, Jerry Mazza and Marc Fischer both doubled in
the 1st for ZP’s only other run. And after a season of
chronicling Tom Dittmeier’s many hitting exploits, balanced
reporting requires we mention his first at bat and the wind that
scattered players and spectators at Allen Park!
