7:00pm - Singletons versus Moby - 60ft field - Oct 24th, Round 7
- The Championship Finals
Jim Reilly thoughts:
Singletons beat Moby Drugs to cap another thrilling Over the Hill
Gang post season tournament. Every single inning had the excitement
and mood of the playoffs. Players were focused on winning the Reilly
Cup and it was clearly evident in the high level of play. Diving catches,
nifty infield play, smart base-running, plenty of long homeruns and
some clutch hitting to win games all contributed to an enjoyable and
hard fought tournament. Congratulations to Singletons, runner up, Moby
and all the teams that make the league a success. Special thanks go
to Mitch Maghakian and Gary Jambor for putting the tournament format
together, to Jerry Mazza for handling newspaper articles and to Allen
Park Manager Bill Murray and his staff for preparing the fields.
Game recap:
This year’s championship game ended up with the number 1 and number
2 teams playing each other, which in theory is just the way it should
be. The game started out slowly as Moby quietly built up a 5-0 lead
after 4 innings but the tide started to change as the 5th began with
Singleton's managing to put one run across the plate which seemed to
wake them from the dead. Awakened they were as Big Red went on to score
19 unanswered runs, most on two out clutch hits before Moby was able
to add 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to make it a respectable 19-8
victory in favor of Singleton's. Some notable plays on the night were
Benny Alberto taking a line drive off his face while pitching and returning
1 inning later to continue his gem of a game on the mound. Alan Rapfogel's
monstrous shot to right that may still be going if not for hitting the
top of the light tower ...and outstanding defensive play by both teams'
shortstops Henry Haseman ( Moby) and Dennis Passeratti ( Singleton's
). Thank you Jim Reilly and the Over the Hill Gang members for another
great year of softball. Singleton's team members... Manager Richie Brancaccio......Benny
Alberto, Tom (Satch) Camarda, Paul Cananattos, Bob Davis, Don Gaghan,
John Gannon, Frank Gordon, Scott Gordon, Larry Grieshaber, Jim McQuade,
Dennis Passeratti, Alan Rapfogel, Gary Sacarro, Richie Smindak, Tommy
( Tino) Sorrentino, Al Veneziano...also Jim McQuade's and Larry Grieshaber's
Dads for all their help during the year.
7:00pm - Hampton, O'Shea's and Moby - 60ft field - Oct 21st,
Round 6 - The Semi Finals
And finally, most of the league missed a windy Tuesday evening
(Oct 21st) at Allen
Park near the end of the tournament. A night that will go down in the record books.
Hampton, Grannys and Moby all brought their lumber and combined to score
a staggering 109 runs in two games. Hampton beat Granny 34-12 in the
opener, followed by a 42-21 slugfest with Moby doubling up Hampton.
Certainly, a night to remember.
